In Jour.Eur.Orch.34(3) HERTEL (2002) described a small flowered species from Croatia as Ophrys illyrica, which is in flower in May and June, about a month later than Ophrys tommasinii. Its stigmatic cave is higher and the stigmatic head is laced stronger than that of Ophrys tommasinii. The colour of the lip is a dark reddish brown, while the lip of Ophrys tommasinii has a lighter yellowish brown colour. PAULUS (2000) in Ber.Arbeitskrs.Heim.Orchid.17(2) determined Andrena pardellei as pollinator of Ophrys illyrica. The first four images have been taken at an very early site on the croatian island Cres.

Similar or same plants from Central Italy have been described as Ophrys ausonia in Natural.belges 85 (Orchid.17) by DELFORGE, DEVILLERS and DEVILLERS-TERSCHUREN.
