GÖLZ and REINHARD described archipelagi in 1986 on orchids from the Croatian island of Korcula. The orchid can also be found in south eastern Italy, mainly at the southern slopes of the Promontorio del Gargano. It is pollinated by Colletes cunicularius, which is in Italy pollinator of Ophrys exaltata subsp. exaltata, Ophrys exaltata subsp. tyrrhena, and Ophrys exaltata subsp. arachnitiformis, too.
From Matera (Province Basilicata) and Quasani (Province of Bari) similar plants have been described as Ophrys mateolana, but are today ususally united with archipelagi.

In Southern Dalmatia (Croatia) there are flowing transitions to Ophrys exaltata subsp. cephalonica, which is mainly distributed in Northwest Greece and Albania.
