Ophrys fusca  LINK

Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:
LINK:  Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link (1767 - 1851), German botanist
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   fusca:   sombre

In 1800 LINK described Ophrys fusca from a site near Lisboa. Today it is assumed, and DELFORGE neo-typified accordingly, that he meant the shown dark orchid which is frequent there, and not Ophrys forestieri (synonym: Ophrys lupercalis), which is less frequent near Lisboa, but wide-spread in almost the whole Mediterranean, and pollinated by Andrena nigroaenea.
Most probably Ophrys fusca is an endemism of Portugal. Its pollinating insect couldn't be determined yet.
