Mahonia x wagneri ist eine gärtnerische Hybride, die in Europa entstand. Die Eltern stammen zwar beide aus Nordamerika, aber aus ganz verschiedenen Regionen: die Gewöhnliche Mahonie Mahonia aquifolium aus dem Nordwesten, dem US-Bundesstaat Oregon bis nach Kanada hinein, während die Fiederblättrige Mahonie  Mahonia pinnata aus Kalifornien im Südwesten der USA stammt, sodass natürliche Hybriden nicht entstehen konnten.
Die Eltern: Mahonia aquifolium ist typischerweise um 1 Meter hoch (sie kann maximal 2 Meter hoch werden), ihre Blätter bestehen aus 5 bis 9 dünneren ledrigen Blättchen. M. pinnata ist hochwüchsiger mit dick-ledrigen aber kleineren Blättchen, von denen 7 bis 13 ein Blatt bilden. Die gelbe Blütenfarbe von M. pinnata ist heller als die von Mahonia aquifolium.

Mahonia x wagneri is a horticultural hybrid that originated in Europe. The parents are both from North America, but from completely different regions: The Oregon Grape Mahonia aquifolium originates from the Northwest, from the US State of Oregon to Canada, while the Shinyleaf Mahonia  Mahonia pinnata is native in California in the Southwestern United States, so that natural hybrids could not arise.
The parents: Mahonia aquifolium is typically about 1 meter tall (it can reach a maximum of 2 meters) with leaves consisting of 5 to 9 thin leathery leaflets. M. pinnata is taller with thick leathery but smaller leaflets, of which 7 to 13 form a leaf. The yellow flower color of M. pinnata is lighter than that of Mahonia aquifolium.
