Mahonia aquifolium ist in Süddeutschland die bei weitem häufigste der aus Nordamerika stammenden Mahonien, die in Parks und Gärten angepflanzt werden. Die Beeren werden durch Vögel verbreitet, und die Pflanze verwildert leicht, besonders in Gegenden mit sandigem Boden wie der Oberrheinischen Tiefebene. Die typischerweise glänzenden Blätter von Mahonia aquifolium bestehen aus 5 - 9 Blättchen, das Verhältnis von Länge und Breite des Endblättchens ist größer als bei anderen Arten: 1,7 bis 2,5 (Jungpflanzen haben anfangs weniger und kürzere Teilblättchen). Die absolute Größe der Blätter ist unwesentlich, und hängt z.B. stark von den Lichtverhältnissen am Standort ab. Der Blattränder sind stark gewellt, die Stachelzähne überwiegend abstehend. Im Winter können die Blätter von Mahonia aquifolium dunkelrot überlaufen sein. Die ganze Pflanze wird typischerweise etwa 1 Meter hoch, kann aber in Ausnahmefällen auch 2 Meter erreichen.
In Franken wurden Hybriden von Mahonia aquifolium mit der hochwüchsigeren und mehrblättrigeren Fiederblättrigen Mahonie Mahonia pinnata sowie mit der niederwüchsigeren, wenigerblättrigen und ausläuferbildenden Kriechenden Mahonie Mahonia repens verwildert gefunden.

Mahonia aquifolium is by far the most common Mahonia in Southern German parks and gardens, and comes from North America. The berries are spread by birds and the plant easily naturalizes, especially in areas with sandy soil such as the Upper Rhine Valley. The typically glossy leaves of Mahonia aquifolium consist of 5 - 9 leaflets, the ratio of length and width of the terminal leaflet is greater than in other species: 1.7 to 2.5 (young plants initially have fewer and shorter leaflets). The absolute size of the leaves is immaterial and depends, for example, on the light conditions at the site. The edges of the leaflets are very wavy, the barbed teeth mostly protruding. In winter, the leaves of Mahonia aquifolium can be tinged with dark red. The whole plant becomes typically 1 meter tall, but can reach 2 meters in rare cases.
In Franconia, hybrids of Mahonia aquifolium with the taller, more multi-leaved Mahonia pinnata were found as well as hybrids with the smaller, less-leaved and stoloniferous Creeping Oregon Grape Mahonia repens.
