Die Weiße Waldhyazinthe  Platanthera bifolia wurde 1753 von LINNÉ beschrieben, das war eine zierliche skandinavische Pflanze. Später wurden kräftige Waldhyazinthen, wie es sie in Mittel- und Südeuropa gibt, als eigene Art Platanthera fornicata (BAB.) BUTTLER bzw. Unterart Platanthera bifolia subsp. latifolia (DREJER) LOJTNANT abgetrennt. Bei Genforschungen, wie sie z.B. 2024 in Zusammenarbeit der Universtität Heidelberg mit dem AHO Baden-Württemberg durchgeführt wurden, erwiesen sich die kräftigen und die zierlichen Exemplare als nicht unterscheidbar. Der früher oft für die kräftige Sippe gebrauchte Name Platanthera solstitialis BÖNNINGH. ex RCHB. 1830 ist ungültig, er wurde ohne Beschreibung und Abbildung veröffentlicht, und wurde in der Vergangenheit für verschiedene mitteleuropäische Platanthera-Sippen benutzt.
Neben der Weißen Waldhyazinthe  Platanthera bifolia sind in Mitteleuropa noch die Grünliche Waldhyazinthe Platanthera chlorantha und Müllers Waldhyazinthe Platanthera pervia zu finden.
