Ophrys aegirtica  P.DELFORGE

Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Ophrys truncata was described by DULAC in 1867 from Mauléon-Magnoac, which is located in Southwestern France in the Northern part of department Hautes-Pyrenees. However, the description is so brief and vague that it is not certain that it was the species depicted, which can now be found a few kilometers further North in department Gers. Because of this uncertainty, Delforge described the depicted species in 1996 newly under the name Ophrys aegirtica. In department Gers, he found Eucera hispanica as pollinating bee, now called Eucera ephippia, which is a different bee than the one that pollinates the Central European Late Spider Orchid.
In the second edition of his field guide, Delforge later also included Ophrys druentica to that species, which is no more valid today.
