Etymology:
   Mahonia:   Bernard McMahon (1775 - 1816), American gardener
   bealei:   Beale (fl. 1850), British gardener in Shanghai who cultivated this shortly before discovered species
   Berberis:   from the Arabic name of the fruit
 

Mahonia bealei comes from China, and is an example of an Asian Mahonia. In Europe it is planted in parks. Other similar Asian Mahonias include Mahonia japonica and the horticultural hybrid between the two, Mahonia x media.
