Plants of the Mannheim Rhine and Muehlau Ports
There are many common ruderal plants in Mannheim's Rhine ports of which several are shown here. But also plants which did not occur originally, i.e. neophytes, were introduced with shiploads. Examples are the Eastern Rocket Sisymbrium orientale from Eastern Europe, and probably also the Annual Valerian Centranthus calcitrapae from the Mediterranean. On the now almost unused wasteland in the ports also other plants found a new home, such as the Twiggy Spurge Euphorbia saratoi, the Branched Horsetail Equisetum ramosissimum, the Bald Wall Bedstraw Galium parisiense var. leiocarpum, or the Garden Baby's Breath Gypsophila scorzonerifolia, which are generally rather rare, but have important occurrences here and at some other locations in Germany.

On May 3, 2009 I found several flowering plants of the Annual Valerian Centranthus calcitrapae in an old crane rail on the east side of the Muehlau port, this was a first find of the Mediterranean plant for Germany. Together with Centranthus calcitrapae I found Galium parisiense at that time but not the variety leiocarpum with hairless fruits, which today is not uncommon at the Mannheim Rhine port and since long time on the Friesenheimer Island, but the nominal variety with hairy fruits, which I haven't seen in Mannheim since then. Unfortunately, the location was destroyed in the following winter when the expansion of the container port was built at this point. On May 22, 2021 I found a big population of Garden Baby's Breath Gypsophila scorzonerifolia at an unused track near the Muehlau port.

At the exit of the Muehlau port to the Rhine, where the surface is not sealed with asphalt or concrete slabs, there are large populations of other plants:
