The shown color combination with violet inner petals is called Iris (x) sambucina (as species or hybrid). Together with Iris squalens, which has yellowish lilac-brown inner petals, it belongs to the Iris sambucina aggregate. The Iris of this group were already generated in the middle ages in monasteries as artificial hybrids between Iris pallida and Iris variegata. Another name for hybrids between the two Iris species is Iris x lurida. | ||
