Some of the Iris, which today have a species name as e.g. Iris germanica,
Iris sambucina,
or Iris squalens are no natural plants, but have been bred by monks or castle gardeners already in the middle ages,
because in those times Iris were assumed to be magical plants which are able to hold enimies off.
