Bei der Zottel-Wicke Vicia villosa ist der Nagel (das ist die "Lippe" der Blüte) deutlich länger als die Platte, bei der ähnlichen Vogel-Wicke Vicia cracca ist der Nagel etwa so lang wie die Platte. Ein noch besseres Unterscheidungsmerkmal sind die Kelchzipfel: Bei Vicia villosa sind die oberen Kelchzipfel fast so lang wie die unteren, während bei Vicia cracca die unteren lang sind, aber die oberen sehr kurz. Die Behaarung sagt wenig über die Artunterscheidung: es gibt auch kaum behaarte Vicia villosa, die ... var. glabrescens genannt werden, andererseits gibt es aber auch mäßig behaarte Vicia cracca.

In the Hairy Vetch Vicia villosa, the nail (that is the "lip" of the flower) is significantly longer than the plate, in the similar Tufted Vetch Vicia cracca the nail is about as long as the plate. A still better distinctive feature are the calyx lobes: In Vicia villosa the upper calyx lobes almost as long as the lower ones, while in Vicia cracca the lower ones are long but the upper ones are very short. The pilosity says little on the distinction of the species: there are hardly hairy Vicia villosa, which are called ... var. glabrescens, on the other hand there are also moderately hairy Vicia cracca.
