Beim Gebirgs-Thymian Thymus polytrichus sind die Stängel auf zwei Seiten behaart, auf den anderen zwei Seiten verkahlend (siehe Fig. 1). Die Blätter werden zum Blütenstand hin größer. Von manchen Autoren wird Thymus polytrichus als Unterart des Frühblühenden Thymians Thymus praecox betrachtet.
In britischen Florenwerken wird Thymus praecox subsp. britannicus meist einfach als Thymus polytrichus bezeichnet, was jedoch missverständlich ist, weil dieser im Landesinneren des kontinentalen Europa andere Eigenschaften besitzt, z.B. die oben genannten.

The Wild Thyme Thymus polytrichus has stalks that are hairy on two sides and glabrous on the other two sides (see Fig. 1). The leaves get larger towards the inflorescence. Some authors consider Thymus polytrichus to be a subspecies of Mother of Thyme Thymus praecox.
In British floral works, Thymus praecox subsp. britannicus is usually referred to simply as Thymus polytrichus, which, however, is mistakable because in inland continental Europe this has different characteristics, e.g. the ones mentioned above.
