Sonchus asper hat typischerweise glänzend grüne Blätter mit zahlreichen (weich-)stacheligen Spitzen, ihre Farbe kann in selteneren Fällen jedoch auch blaugrün sein, was sonst eher als typisch für Sonchus oleraceus gilt. In schwierigen Fällen liefern die Früchte unzweifelhafte Bestimmungsmerkmale: Die Achänen von Sonchus asper sind bauchiger als die länglicheren von Sonchus oleraceus. Neben den bei beiden vorhandenen Längsrinnen besitzen die Achänen von Sonchus oleraceus meist eine quer-runzelige Oberfläche, die bei den Achänen mit glatter Oberfläche von Sonchus asper nicht vorhanden ist.

Typically Sonchus asper has glossy green leaves with many (soft) prickly tips, In rare cases, however, their color can also be blue-green, which is otherwise more typical for Sonchus oleraceus. In difficult cases the fruits provide unquestionable identification attributes: The achenes of Sonchus asper are more bulbous than the more elongated ones of Sonchus oleraceus. Beneath the longitudinal furrows which are available in both, the achenes of Sonchus oleraceus have usually a transversely wrinkled surface, which is not present on the achenes of Sonchus asper with smooth surface.
