Nachtkerzen sind zweijährige Pflanzen: im ersten Jahr bildet sich eine Blattrosette, im zweiten Jahr gelangt die Pflanze zur Blüte.
Die häufige Oenothera biennis hat eher große Blüten und keine roten Anteile in den oberen Stängel- und Blütenteilen. Die Mittelrippe der Blätter ist aber rötlich (bei weißer Mittelrippe ist auf Oenothera suaveolens zu prüfen).
Es könnte sein, dass Oenothera biennis schon sehr lange in Europa und Asien heimisch ist, doch man weiß das nicht sicher. Die Nachtkerzen in Amerika, die Oenothera biennis genannt werden, sind etwas verschieden von den europäischen.

Evening Primroses are biannual plants: in the first year a rosette of leaves is growing, in the second year the plant comes to flower.
The frequent Oenothera biennis has relative big blossoms and no red portions in the upper parts of stem and blossoms. But the mid rip of the leaves is reddish (if it is white the plant should be checked on Oenothera suaveolens).
It's possible that Oenothera biennis is native in Europe and Asia for long time, but this isn't known for sure. The Evening Primroses of America, which are called Oenothera biennis, are slightly different from the European ones.
