Die erst 2004 von S.HERTEL und PRESSER aus einem Wald der Serre San Bruno in Süditalien beschriebene Epipactis sanguinea sieht ähnlich aus wie die einen Monat früher an der gleichen Stelle blühende Epipactis meridionalis, die oft auch den für Epipactis sanguinea namensgebenden "Blutfleck" auf dem Epichil besitzt. Allerdings wird Epipactis meridionalis von Insekten bestäubt, wofür sie eine funktionsfähige Rostelldrüse (Viscidium) besitzt, während Epipactis sanguinea autogam ist.

Epipactis sanguinea which has been described not until 2004 by S.HERTEL and PRESSER from a wood in the Serre San Bruno in Southern Italy is looking similar to Epipactis meridionalis, which is growing at the same place but is in flower a month earlier. Both have often the "bloodstain" on the epichile, that caused the name for Epipactis sanguinea. However Epipactis meridionalis is pollinated by insects for which it has a functional viscidium, while Epipactis sanguinea is self pollinating.
