In the native Eleocharis ovata, the faded lower flowers fall off, so that the inflorescence always looks same short, while in Eleocharis obtusa and Eleocharis engelmannii, both introduced from North America, they remain in the inflorescence, and the inflorescence therefore becomes longer and longer.
