Dass der Name Chenopodium rhombifolium WILLD. zu der Sippe gehört, die bisher als Chenopodium intermedium MERT. & W.D.J.KOCH bekannt war, wurde erst kürzlich wieder erkannt, und von Dr. Rolf Wisskirchen und Franz Josef Weicherding in 'Zur Identität des Sägeblättrigen Gänsefußes (Chenopodium rhombifolium WILLD., Chenopodiaceae) und seiner Verbreitung im südwestdeutschen Raum und im angrenzenden Lothringen' dargelegt. Die in Westeuropa verbreitete Sippe wurde in der jüngeren Vergangenheit meist als Varietät intermedium des in Ost- und Südeuropa verbreiteten Ruten-Gänsefußes Chenopodium urbicum geführt. Vom eigentlichen Chenopodium urbicum unterscheidet sich die Sippe durch eine deutlich keilförmige Blattbasis und tiefe Zähne am Rand der Blätter. Die ersten Blätter beider Sippen im Frühjahr sind jedoch sehr ähnlich, fast gleichseitig dreieckig, und unterscheiden sich nur durch die gleichmäßigere und schwächere Zähnung bei Chenopodium urbicum. Die samentragenden Äste kräftiger Pflanzen von Chenopodium urbicum im Herbst stehen senkrecht direkt am Stängel (daher kommt der Name Ruten-Gänsefuß), während sie bei Chenopodium rhombifolium im spitzen Winkel abstehen. Aus der Oberrheinischen Tiefebene bei Mannheim gibt es auch alte Herbarbelege von Chenopodium urbicum, doch heute wird in der Region nur noch Chenopodium rhombifolium gefunden. Französische Botaniker stellen Chenopodium rhombifolium in die Verwandtschaft von Chenopodium rubrum. Chenopodium rhombifolium könnte sich hybridogen aus Chenopodium urbicum und Chenopodium rubrum entwickelt haben.

It has only recently been recognized again that the name Chenopodium rhombifolium WILLD. belongs to the clan which up to now has been known as Chenopodium intermedium MERT. & W.D.J.KOCH . Dr. Rolf Wisskirchen and Franz-Josef Weicherding stated about it in 'On the identity of the saw-blade goosefoot (Chenopodium rhombifolium WILLD., Chenopodiaceae) and its distribution in South-West Germany and neighboring Lorraine'. In the younger past the clan which is found in Western Europe has usually been understood as variety of City Goosefoot Chenopodium urbicum which occurs in Eastern and Southern Europe. From true Chenopodium urbicum the clan differs by a wedge-shaped leaf base and deep teeth at the edges of the leaves. The first leaves of both clans in spring are however similarly equilateral triangular, only the smaller and more uniform teeth at the leaf edges of Chenopodium urbicum are different. The seed branches of strong plants of Chenopodium urbicum in autumn are standing vertically directly at the stem (similar to a rod), while those of Chenopodium rhombifolium are sticking out in an acute angle. There are old herbarium sheets from the upper Rhine valley near Mannheim showing Chenopodium urbicum, too, but today only Chenopodium rhombifolium is still found in the region. French botanists see Chenopodium rhombifolium as closely related to Chenopodium rubrum. Chenopodium rhombifolium might have evolved hybridogenously from Chenopodium urbicum and Chenopodium rubrum.
