Like Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia is one of the wild American wine species onto which European grape varieties have been grafted since the grape phylloxera was introduced from America around 1863 which destroyed the roots of most European grape vines. The grapes of Vitis riparia are rarely used for winemaking directly. | ||
