Etymology: | |||
Vicia: | Roman plant name, from vincere = to enwind
sativa: | planted | ||
Vicia sativa var. sativa (resp. convar. sativa since this is a bred plant) with a leaflet width of at least five millimeters is a vetch which was bred long time ago for animal feeding and which formerly has widely been grown. At least in Central Europe this has decreased, since there are now breedings of other Legumes which produce more mass in shorter time. Research in the sixties and seventies of the previous century has shown that its wild-growing archetype is Vicia sativa var. cosentini which is growing in the Mediterranean region.
