Fam.: Rosaceae / Rose Fam.

Genus:  Sorbus  L.

Authors:
WILMOTT:  Alfred James Wilmott (1888 - 1950), English botanist
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Sorbus:   Roman name of the Service Tree Sorbus domestica, from sorbere = to slurp
vagensis:   from British river Wye (Vaga)

The Franconian Sorbus cochleariformis und Sorbus x vagensis are diploid and not apomictic, and propagate sexually. So today they have to be seen as synonyms of the Thuringian Sorbus x decipiens ( = Karpatisorbus x hybrida). Those hybrid clans have fertile seed and create small populations, which initially lead to the suspicion to be apomictic as several Sorbus clans of more western regions. This applies also for the Thuringian Sorbus acutiloba, Sorbus acutisecta, Sorbus heilingensis, Sorbus isenacensis, Sorbus multicrenata, and Sorbus parumlobata, which has been bescribed in 'Meyer, N., Gregor, T., Meierott, L. & Paule, J. (2014): Diploidy suggests hybrid origin and sexuality in Sorbus subgen. Tormaria from Thuringia, Central Germany'.
