Etymology:
   Silene:   Silen, Greek legendary figure
   acaulis:   stemless
 

Silene acaulis is growing on calcareous mountains. A similar 'parallel species', which is growing on silicate (primary rocks), is Silene exscapa, that has somewhat narrower petals.
