Scilla: | Greek name of the Sea Squill Charybdis maritima
vindobonensis: | from Vienna (Austria)
Scilla vindobonensis is a squill from the group around Scilla bifolia s.str., which is easily distinguishable from this species: The flowers are relatively small with a white center. At a certain stage the buds are greenish-bluish striped, see e.g. Fig. 7. The species is mainly distributed in the lower half of the Austrian Danube valley and some tributary valleys. It blooms very early, at the beginning of April 2023 only the one specimen shown in Fig. 33 to 39 was still in bloom out of hundreds of plants of six visited sites, as well as one specimen which was heavily taken by the dedicated smut fungus (Fig. 30 - 32). At the beginning of March 2024 there were already many specimens fading, but many plants were still in flower.
