Etymology:
   Ptilostemon:   ptilon = feather, stemon = stamen
   afer:   from Northern Africa
 

Ptilostemon afer originates from the Balkans. This in contradiction to the species name afer which means the parts of Northern Africa which were already known to the Romans.
