Authors: | |||
Georges C. Chr. Rouy (1851 - 1924), French botanist
Alexander Carl Heinrich Braun (1805 - 1877), German botanist
Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher (1804 - 1849), Austrian botanist, numismatist and sinologist
Etymology: | |||
Petrocoptis: | petros = rock, koptos = to break up
crassifolia: | thick-leaved
Unfortunately I have not been in the Western Pyrenees at the suitable time to see the dark pink blossoms of this plant, which have a similar form as those of Silene rupestris. The genus comprises only few species which are growing in the Pyrenees and other mountains of Northern Spain, and is closely related to Silene, however some differences justify the posting of a separate genus. Petrocoptis means "rock breaker" because the plant is usually growing in small gaps in the rock.
