Mespilus: | Roman plant name
germanica: | from Germany
The Medlar Mespilus germanica is a small tree and belongs to the Pomaceous Fruits, as e.g. Apples (Malus), Pears (Pyrus), Quinces (Cydonia), Mountain Ashes (Sorbus), Cotoneaster, Hawthorn (Crataegus), and Firethorn (Pyracantha). The fruit is edible, but today rather uncommon, while in the Middle Ages there was extensive cultivation in Central and Southern Europe. Since the species has been cultivated already very early, its original area can not be specified surely, Eastern European and Western Asian areas are assumed.
