In several botanical works the shown color combination with yellowish lilac-brown inner petals is called Iris (x) squalens (as species or hybrid). Together with Iris sambucina in narrow sense, which has violet inner petals, it belongs to the Iris sambucina aggregate. The Iris of this group were already generated in the middle ages in monasteries as artificial hybrids between Iris pallida and Iris variegata. Another name for hybrids between the two Iris species is Iris x lurida. In Southern Germany Iris squalens is rather rare. In Northern Croatia it is more frequent, there also its parent species Iris variegata can be found in the nature.
