   Cupressus:   Greek name of Cypres
   sempervirens:   always alive
   pyramidalis:   pyramid-like
   stricta:   stiff
 

The svelte Italian Cypresses with clinging branches which are well-known as ornamental trees of Tuscany (Italy), and the Mediterranean Cypresses with cantilevered branches are belonging to the same species and are only distinguished on varietal level:
- Cupressus sempervirens var. pyramidalis resp. Cupressus sempervirens var. stricta
- Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis resp. Cupressus sempervirens var. sempervirens.
