Fam.: Buxaceae / Box Fam.

Genus:  Buxus  L.

Authors:
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Buxus:   Roman plant name, from pykos = hard (hard wood)
   sempervirens:   always alive

In the beginning of the 21st century the Box Tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis was introduced from East Asia to Central Europe. Its caterpillars are eating the leaves of Boxwood in gardens, parks, and nature. If the infestation occurs repeatedly the plants can die off. The first 8 photos have been taken in a boxwood forest near Grenzach-Wyhlen on the High-Rhine, where weaker plants have died off, but more vigorous boxwood still drives leaves every year even about ten years after the first infestation. However the leaves don't grow at the thin branches anymore but directly out of the trunk.
The photos from Fig. 9 have been taken before the infestation took place.
