Mahonia x wagneri is a horticultural hybrid that originated in Europe. The parents are both from North America, but from completely different regions: The Oregon Grape Mahonia aquifolium originates from the Northwest, from the US State of Oregon to Canada, while the Shinyleaf Mahonia  Mahonia pinnata is native in California in the southwestern United States, so that natural hybrids could not arise.
The parents: Mahonia aquifolium is typically about 1 meter tall (it can reach a maximum of 2 meters) with leaves consisting of 5 to 9 thin leathery leaflets. M. pinnata is taller with thick leathery but smaller leaflets, of which 7 to 13 form a leaf. The yellow flower color of M. pinnata is lighter than that of Mahonia aquifolium.
