Alkanna: | Arabic name of the plant
orientalis: | Eastern, from the Orient
hellenica: | from Greece
For most authors the Alkanna shown here belongs to Alkanna orientalis, which usually has flat non-undulate leaves. But RECHINGER (fil.) as well as the rather new "Vascular plants of Greece - an annotated checklist" (2013) separate the plants shown here with the striking undulate leaves as Alkanna hellenica for which also a separate distribution is given, the Greek mainland and neighbouring islands, while Alkanna orientalis occurs in the Eastern Aegean islands and the Near East.
