Erst in jüngster Zeit setzt sich wieder die eigentlich sehr alte Erkenntnis durch, dass es verschiedene unterscheidbare Sippen der
Weißen Waldhyazinthe in Mittel- und Nordeuropa gibt.
Die hier gezeigte, in Mitteleuropa (und auch in Südeuropa) häufigste der Weißen Waldhyazinthen
ist eine mit großer Statur (30 - 60 cm) und einem meist lockeren Blütenstand aus relativ großen Blüten.
Die Lippe ist deutlich länger als die seitlichen Sepalen. Sie blüht relativ früh.
Plantanthera bifolia subsp. latifolia besiedelt gerne basische Standorte (z.B. auf Kalk).
Der früher oft für die große Weiße Waldhyazinthe gebrauchte Name Platanthera solstitialis BÖNNINGH. ex RCHB. 1830 ist ungültig,
er wurde ohne Beschreibung und Abbildung veröffentlicht,
und wurde in der Vergangenheit für verschiedene mitteleuropäische Platanthera-Sippen benutzt.
