Etymology: | |||
Ophrys: | Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
sicula: | from Sicily | ||
lutea: | yellow | ||
minor: | small | ||
galilaea: | from Galilea
The small yellow orchid Ophrys sicula is widely distributed in the Mediterranean.
Not only the lip is smaller than that of Ophrys lutea and
Ophrys phryganae, but also the position of the lip
is different. Ophrys sicula holds it more or less horizontally, while it is more or less steeply
bowed down at the other species, which seems to be an adaption for the particular pollinating bee.
