Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:
E.G.CAMUS:  Edmond Gustave Camus (1852 - 1915), French botanist with main focus on orchids
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
saratoi:   César Honoré Sarato (1830 - 1893), botanist and marine biologist from Nice (France)

In 1999 Prof. PAULUS found different pollinator bees for Ophrys saratoi (Megachile albonotata) and Ophrys aurelia (Megachile parietaria und pyrenaica) as mentioned in Jour.Eur.Orch. 31 (2): 347ff. According to the book 'Les Orchidées sauvages de France' (2004) from REMY SOUCHE Ophrys aurelia carries the speculum rather near the lower end of the lip, while at Ophrys saratoi it is arranged towards the middle of the lip.
In the case of the orchids from Col d'Eze there is also a certain similarity to Ophrys drumana. Since the beginning of the 21th century French botanists are using Ophrys saratoi as older preferential name of the Drome Orchid Ophrys drumana.
